- The former “Oso Blanco” State Penitentiary,
structure that will become a multi-use facility and the center
of the Corridor
In order to finance the different
developmental stages of the Knowledge Corridor, the Trust
is acquiring from the Commonwealth government the property
that houses the former “Oso Blanco” State Penitentiary
via a land/property transfer.
Benefits for Puerto Rico:
- The Corridor will allow Puerto Rico to play an active role
in commercialization of ideas and innovation, currently a
multimillion-dollar international market.
- It will create more and better employment opportunities
for Puerto Rico’s science professionals.
- It will create opportunities for local and foreign investors.
It will also open the door for the development of support
businesses such as hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, etc.
- It will revitalize and strengthen Puerto Rico’s position
as the ideal location for biotechnology research, development,
and manufacture.
- It will help retain our science professionals as well as
attract talented individuals from all over the world.
Puerto Rico is the ideal place for
this type of initiative because:
- The Island already has proven experience in the pharmaceutical
industry.
- Puerto Rico’s workforce is already familiar with these
procedures: 40,000 direct workers and 100,000 additional workers
in supportive areas, such as legal services, regulatory processes,
and banking.
- The Island produces 50% of the medical devices sold in the
U.S. and over 20 of the world’s leading pharmaceutical
companies have either corporate offices and/or manufacturing
plants in Puerto Rico.
- Puerto Rico has a solid transportation network (roads, highways,
air and marine routes) and communications infrastructures
(telecommunications network, telephony, Internet, etc.).
- Puerto Rico has the tools that favor corporate investment
through a variety of government incentives.
